In 2003, while serving in Bosnia, I was introduced to Stefan, a 4-year-old boy born with a severe and life-threatening facial defect. This began a 13-year journey that would forever change both of our lives. Along the way, we met Professor David Dunaway C.B.E., a world-class surgeon, and witnessed the incredible support of people from the UK, who generously contributed to Stefan’s transformative surgeries.

Wayne also had a song written about him and his fellow soldiers titled “Eternal Soldier”. Written by Mark Vine, a local author of The Crabchurch Conspiracy (Visit Mark’s Website), the song is performed by the amazing rock band The Dolmen.
Beginning the Journey: Surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital
Stefan’s medical journey started at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in July 2003, where his teeth were removed to prepare for future surgeries. Later that year, in October, Stefan underwent a gruelling 12-hour operation to reconstruct his facial bones.
“The strength and bravery Stefan displayed at such a young age were beyond words,” Wayne reflects.
The Third Surgery: Continued Remodelling
In 2007, Stefan returned to the UK for his third surgery at GOSH. This time, the focus was on beginning the remodelling of his nose, an essential part of his long-term transformation. Each surgery brought Stefan closer to his new face, and each operation revealed the brilliance of Professor Dunaway’s skill and planning.
Final GOSH Surgery: Nasal and Dental Alignment
In 2014, Stefan underwent his final surgery at GOSH, where Professor Dunaway completed the remodelling of his nose and aligned his teeth. This procedure marked a major milestone in Stefan’s journey, showcasing the results of years of dedicated surgical care.

The Final Procedure: Full Nasal Reconstruction at The Portland Hospital
Stefan’s final surgery took place at The Portland Hospital in 2016, marking the end of his medical journey. Unintentionally, the operation occurred on 18th October, exactly 13 years to the day since his 12-hour operation in 2003. This final procedure corrected the shape and function of his nose, completing Stefan’s transformation.

Reflections on Stefan’s Journey
Although Stefan’s long and painful journey has come to an end, the bond with the Savic family remains strong. Their relationship has shown Wayne that even one person can make a tremendous difference in the world.
