In the war-torn landscape of Bosnia, amid the echoes of gunfire and grief, a British soldier made a quiet but life-altering vow — one that would transform not just a single child’s future, but also his own.
SSgt. Wayne Ingram MBE, a seasoned soldier with a tour in Northern Ireland under his belt, was deployed with the 9th/12th Royal Lancers to Bosnia in 2003. His unit’s mission was twofold: to encourage the disarmament of local militias and rebuild trust among communities fractured by years of civil war. But what unfolded in the months that followed was never part of any briefing. It was something deeper, more personal — and it began with a single photograph.
A Face That Couldn’t Be Forgotten
During a meeting with local officials in the town of Laktasi, Wayne was shown a photograph of a young boy — Stefan Slavic, then just four years old — who had been born with a rare and severe facial cleft.
Stefan’s deformity wasn’t just disfiguring. It was deadly.
Where his nose should have been, there was instead a large, exposed growth of bone and tissue slowly pressing into his nasal cavity and forcing his eyes apart. He had only one working airway and faced a future cut tragically short — unless something could be done.

In one of the campaign’s early moments, Wayne and his team hosted a football match in Bosnia to raise funds — a seemingly simple event that brought former enemies together, shoulder-to-shoulder, for a shared cause. That day, locals voluntarily handed over over 100 AK-47s, grenades, and ammunition in an unprompted act of peace.
One child’s story was already creating ripple effects across a fractured region.
The Operations That Changed Everything
Back in the UK, Wayne worked tirelessly to organise the logistics and funding required for Stefan to undergo treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital, led by renowned craniofacial surgeon Professor David Dunaway.
The first operation alone lasted over 12 hours and involved deconstructing and rebuilding Stefan’s skull — a procedure so complex it bordered on the miraculous.
Over the years, Stefan endured surgery after surgery — on his nose, mouth, and facial bones. Despite the pain, Wayne never once saw him cry. He never once heard him complain. Even during recovery, when morphine was available at the press of a button, Stefan simply endured.
Today, that little boy has grown into a kind, confident man.
