Stefan’s journey has now finished.
In 2003 whilst serving as a soldier in Bosnia I was introduced to Stefan, a 4 year old local national boy, who was born with a severe facial defect. 2003 started a 13 year journey for us both, introducing us to the amazing David Dunaway and witnessing the outstanding support always given by the UK populous.
A breakdown of events saw Stefan have his first operation in July 2003, where David removed all of his teeth in preparation to his next operation. This surgical procedure, along with the next four were conducted within the walls of the world famous Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, (GOSH), in London.
18th October 2003 Stefan underwent a mammoth 12 hour operation to deconstruct, then reconstruct his facial bones to allow him to have a normal appearance.
2007 Stefan returned to the UK to have another operation to start the transformation of his nose.
2014 Saw Stefan again at GOSH for the last time. David added to the earlier nasal operation and also aligned his teeth.
18th October 2016 he returned for his final operation which was conducted at The Portland Hospital. This final surgical procedure allowed David and his team of surgeons to correct Stefan’s nose. Unbeknown at the time of arranging the operation in coincided with it being the same day, exactly 13 years previous that he had his main 12 hour operation. The results were truly remarkable, breath taking.
To witness the amazing transformation achieved by David over these many years has been amazing, miraculous, staggering…the list goes on. Mr David Dunaway is a gifted, talented surgeon who has given so much to many children throughout the world, and continue to give to. I have been privileged to see it first hand, and feel lucky to class him as a friend.
Stefan’s journey has now ended…I feel blessed to have been along for the ride!
